Danbury Squad:  Conor Hall, Alex Porter, Dan Atkinson, Annabel Stone

As the teams arrived for the opening match of this summer season it was
snowing in Southend. A quick rethink allowed the match to continue on
Southend’s indoor courts (how lucky they are…) – a very wise decision
given the downpour only 20 mins later. Despite the emphatic scoreline this
match was very tough, with many long rallies, and hard games. At the crucial
points Danbury held firm and were perhaps just a bit more resilient, as the
talent on show was pretty even.

Despite the emphatic scoreline this match was very tough, with many long
rallies, and hard games. At the crucial points Danbury held firm and were
perhaps just a bit more resilient, as the talent on show was pretty even.

The 2 stand out matches both involved Danbury’s Alex Porter, playing up as
the no 2 seed.  In his singles match, Southend’s Vinay Soares started like a
steam train and blasted his way through the opening games in a matter of
minutes leaving Danbury’s Porter somewhat shell-shocked. Lesser players
would have buckled but Mr Porter is made of sterner stuff and battled his
way back into the set winning the next 4 games on the bounce. The 2nd set
was very long and tough – well over 1/2 an hour – with Alex clinching the
match 4-2 4-1 for the hardest of victories.

No rest for the wicked and it was straight into the doubles where the
Danbury team of Conor Hall and Alex Porter took on Southend’s finest of Jess
Baxter and that man Vinay Soares (“Mr Forehand” to his friends). At times a
battle of attrition where Soares would fire his cannonball forehands down
both edges and Hall & Porter would work tirelessly not only to retrieve the
shot but also direct their returns – stunning tennis for 9 and 10 yr olds
showing excellent technique, power, resilience and strategy.  Danbury served
out the match 4-2 4-1 with Conor’s serve proving too good on the day.

In support of the top seeds Dan Atkinson, playing his first match for the
team, showed great determination and skill in overcoming the tricky Jake
Stone, particularly in a very close first set. Final score 5-3 4-0. Well
Done Dan!

Many thanks to James and David at Southend for their excellent hospitality –
very much appreciated.
